Blank bio
- Name: Colin Benson
- Profession/Study: Software Engineer
- Country: Born in Ireland. Living in the USA
- Personal history of photography. I had wanted to do it for years but
feared that I could manage to save for the equipment but would never
be able to feed my appetite for film. Then I got a job and forgot
about it until last year when the yearning came back. Since then I've
been on the trail to photographic obsession.
- preferred subjects: landscape and nature closeup.
- materials (film, filters, paper, chemistry): Don't know yet. I've
been doing B&W on a variety of films (XP-2, Delta 100, T-MAX) and
printing on MG III for about a year on and off but I haven't tried IR
yet. Hopefully I'll learn enough from this list to change that.
- format (35mm/medium format/large format): 35mm right
now. Contemplating the jump to LF (but can I carry a 6.5lb 4X5 around
the mountains for a day?)
- Other strange hobbies: I read a lot. Photography is my artistic
outlet. I write wireless routing protocols for money but thats just
because they pay me to play.
- How did you find out about this list: I saw it mentioned in the
Nikon mailing list
- Expand on anything photographic you like:
I don't like photographing people, I guess I'm afraid that the search
for that great 'candid' will get me a broken nose. I'm not willing to
buy the lenses I might need for wildlife. That leaves me with
mountains and flowers both of which feel quite sufficient thus far. My
leaning towards large format is a result of my frustration at my
inability to get an 8x10 that isn't pin sharp. Occasionally I get
something so great it makes me want to give up my day job and take 100
more like it!
Oh, and the Fergus Mixolydian tag is not indicative of any musical
ability on my part. Rather, I felt a certain affinity to the character
of that name in Thomas Pynchon's "V".
