There are still the sprocket holes to worry about. If the holes on
the top (non-HIE) layers line up, they would let light get to the HIE.

An old-fashioned hand splicer for 35mm film should do the alignment.
Then the question is how to make the splice. As long as the tape or
whatever and the non-HIE film are removed before processing, this
shouldn't be critical.
