Not to ignore your fascinating account of the flea market, but
"oliebollen" *looks* as though it would translates as "oil balls,"
which suggests some sort of small, round doughnuts or crullers.  One
U.S. doughnut chain cooks the "holes" cut out of its doughnuts and
sells them as "Munchkins."  Something similar, perhaps?
