No, I did not know about his losing the first arial shots.  And since
I take him very seriously, this is important information for me.  I've
read most of Le Vol du Geant (the only book of his in the New York
Public Library) but not Quand J'Etais Photographe, which is presumably
on its way by ocean mail from a French vendor.  Can you tell me where
the information about his losing his first arial shots is documented?

Tournachon) took the first airial photographs ever--of the Etoile,
from a tethered balloon, in which he had to process the wet plates he
worked with--and the first underground photographs.  There were two
sets of the latter.  I think the earlier was in the Paris catacombs,
as they were being cleared.  The other was in Hausmann's brand new
storm sewers.]

Verne est beaucoup mieux en francais qu'en traduction.  La plupart des
traductions anglais sont pour les jeunes (trop enfantine, trop
didactique) ou pour les amateurs de livres (trop literaires--manquant
le style commode et les plaisantries subtils des originaux).

You're aware, I imagine, that Verne was the secretary of a society
that Nadar founded to promote the idea of heavier-than-air craft?
