Re: Maximizing Grain

There are several films which have very large grain naturally
which do not have the handling and severe halation problems of
HIE.

I would suggest that, if extreme grain is desierd, Kodak 2475
Recording film is a great candidate. It makes the grain in
TMZ (T-Max 3200) look fine by comparison. TMZ, in fact produces
coarse grain by conventional standards, but the grain is remarkably
even and fine detail is preserved. The grain of either of these
can be greatly accentuated by processing in Dektol. Better yet,
you might try processing in the Windisch Compensating Pyrocatechin
developer. It produces "dye puffs" around every developed grain.
These dye areas are in fact oxidized developer, just like in pyro
development, but for some reason, Pyrocatechol seems to make more
distinct dots on the negative than Pyrogallol. One hint, though.
In the highlights, the dye puffs seem to merge in to a homogeneous whole,
thus destroying the effect that you desier. So if you want the grain,
oddly, you dare not overexpose!

Lots of luck!
