Best performance/cost ratio I've seen is an Epson (Seiko in Europe?)
Stylus Color, in the 720-dpi dithered monochrome mode using the
premium (not glossy) paper.  The manual talks as though you'd never
want to do monochrome in the highest-quality mode, but the lesser
modes leave washed-out blacks, while the "full treatment" can result
in rich, finely detailed images.
