If you are using a filter over your lens close to true IR and nearly opaque
to visible light, use the plastic from an old TV or VCR remote control. The
remotes emit infrared radiation to change channels, so the plastic panel on
the front is good to cut down for an IR light meter filter. It's not
optically good enough to put in front of your lens though-unless you want
weird distortion!
I've tried it and it seems to work pretty well with the Kodak HIE and a
Hoya R72 filter on my lens.
