Since you are going to have to burn in the fogged area, you'd first
have to make a film positive from the leader, so that the fogged area
is *clearer* then the upper part of the image area.  This, together
with the other possible sources of image irregularity doesn't leave
much room to doubt the ultimate failure of this approach.

|P.S.  The end result of all this is that I'm either going to get a
|body without the IR sprocket counter, or change all of my IR photography
|over to 4x5.  This is a pain in the rear!

And a pain in the pocketbook.  Getting a spare body for IR sounds far
more economical.  On the other hand, if you're glad to have an excuse
to go to the 4x5 material...
