I think that the key difference between B/W IR and Ektachrome IR film is
that in the case of the colour film, only one of the film layers is
sensative to infrared light.  If you use a IR filter on the lens, you will
be blocking out the remaining two layers on the film, essentially turning
the film monochromatic.  The interesting effects of the film are due to the
interplay between the non-IR and IR layers.
