Walter Clark's Book - The Facts (Maybe)
- From: Andy Finney <andy@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Subject: Walter Clark's Book - The Facts (Maybe)

I have been following the correspondance regarding the copying of Walter
Clark's book with interest. I fear we can all have a hypocritical attitude
to copying at times, and I would include myself in this. So I would not
wish to make any further comments on the rights (no pun intended) and
wrongs of copying the book. Instead I offer some information I found on
line.
I searched the Library of Congress LOCIS database for information and found
that John Wiley published the third edition of the book as recently as 1978
(approx). At that time, Walter Clark's dates were given as 1899- which
suggests that he was alive in 1978.
So, there have been further 'editions' of the book, albeit with what are
probably extensive re-writes. I have e-mailed Wileys to ask if they still
have any in print. It is not in their current on-line catalogue, neither
is the book series.
This is the LOCIS record for the book:
Gibson, Henry Louis, 1906-
Photography by infrared : its principles and applications / H. Lou Gibson.
A 3d ed. of Photography by infrared by Walter Clark. New York : Wiley, c1978.
xxiv, 545 p., [1] leaf of plates : ill. ; 24 cm.
LC CALL NUMBER: TR755 .C55 1978
SUBJECTS:
Infrared photography.
OTHER NAMES:
Clark, Walter, 1899- Photography by infrared.
SERIES TITLES (Indexed under SERI option):
Wiley series on photographic science and technology and the graphic arts
NOTES:
"A Wiley-Interscience publication."
Includes bibliographies and index.
The ISBN is 047115895X
It looks likely that the difficulty in finding recent editions is caused by
Mr Gibson being credited as first author. I suspect that Walter Clark, if
he was indeed alive in 1978, was unable to contribute to this edition,
otherwise his name would be first since it is first alphabetically.

I had wondered why Kodak had no information about HIE on their web site and
finally asked for their permission to reproduce it on mine. They granted
permission but I was unable to get around to it for a while and then,
through this group, I found out that they had got around to putting quite a
good data sheet up there. Maybe they were persuaded by enquiries. In the
end, I got what I wanted, which was the ability to point my visitors to
Kodak data ... so it was worth asking.
I have to say as a caveat to this note that I am not an IP lawyer but an
interested layman ... I develop multimedia and knowledge of rights is
important there of course. I have written on the subject and have had my
writing checked by lawyers in both the UK and the US, so I believe my basic
grounding to be sound. I must, however, say that I am saddened by the
acrimonious way some parts of this discussion have been conducted and also
that IMHO some of the comments made about IP have been innacurate,
misleading and innapropriate ... though much of it was correct. In order
to raise the humour of the group I offer a smiley farm and an on-going
invitation to visit my site, look around, and then follow some of the links
to other people's work ... some of them names you will know.
