I set up my darkroom for a little under $300. I could not afford anything
fancy in an enlarger so I have a Omega condensor enlarger. I manage quite
well with a small cannister and one reel. I wouldn't be without the
Kinnderman film loader. I have my setup in a spare bedroom that has acces
to a small bath for my water supply. The hardest thing for me was making
the room light-tight. I tried everything. Darkroom plastic, boards you
name it. What finally worked was of all things heavy duty aluminum foil.
It was pliable enough to work over little "problem" areas. I sometimes
wonder though if the local police might stop to investigate as you can see
the windows blocked out from outside. Not having ever done so myself, but
I think that "pot" growers black out windows and grow the plants by
special lights.
One thing that I understand is of the most importance is ventilation. I
don't have a fan myself, but since you are starting from scratch that is
an important requirement.
One more thing. Someone mentioned the October issue of Shutterbug
recently. I bought it only because the girl who has a photo on the cover
and an article inside lives nearby and I've run into her at the photo
store several times. I personally don't care much for her style, but I did
notice that at the end of the article it mentioned that her next project
is underwater infrared. There was a small example. She's quite successful
in this area.
