My sink is not in my darkroom, but it is about eight feet away. You could
mix your chemicals outside of the dark area, and carry them into your room
to pour into your trays. My situation is not ideal, but it enables me to
do my own work.

I think after having worked on a long table, plus a small file cabinet at
the end I would like to have either an L type arrangement or a counter on
each side. You need your dry area, but you need to be able to go 
efficiently to your wet area. I'm sure you can find some good articles on
darkroom design as you mentioned. Don't know about acutal square footage
though. Maybe someone else has an idea.
