I don't think "artsy sales" have much influence on Kodak's product plans and
I think a time will come when HIE will have to be stockpiled. Scotchchrome
1000 and Agfrachrome 1000 were both popular "art films" that were
discontinued. Agfrachrome 1000 was brought back in small quantities
recently (with very large minimum purchase requirements for retailers)
because of demand from, not art photographers, but the fashion industry,
which uses it extensively.
I have stopped using HIE because my photography is mostly medium format now
(most of my 35mm work uses my stockpile of Scotchchrome 1000). I see other
film manufacturers as far more interested in "art film" and will probably
use less and less Kodak over time (although Tri-X is still my preferred
"standard" B&W film.) If HIE came out in 120, my attitude would change
quickly, but I don't see any interest there on the part of Kodak.
