Yes, loading in the dark is frustrating for me, too! I use an old
Nikkormat FT-N for my HIE. My other 35mm body is a self-loader, so
I got the pleasant opportunity of relearning the loading technique
in the dark. One advantage is that you can squeeze 39-40 frames out
of a 36 exp. roll. Once I think the tab is going onto the takeup spool,
I wind back the film in the can with the rewind button until I feel a
tad of tension. Then, I close the back, hit the shutter release once,
and while feeling the edge of the rewind knob, advance the film with
the advance lever. If the rewind knob turns "backwards", I know I've got
the film loaded. If not, I'm still in the dark and haven't lost more
than the time to repeat the process.
