Nobody gets mad at anyone, we are all here to learn (and nobody 
certainly knows it all!)
There is no minimum level required, although you might learn faster 
if you download the document "frequently asked questions about 
infrared" (IR-FAQ). You can find a link to this document on my

(I assume you have a web-browser like Netscape to read these HTML

Contrast indeed increases if you use darker filters, but foliage also 
shows more white. The darker the filter, the less visible light is 
recorded, and the more real infrared (only relatively, since you *do* 
need to increase exposure 1 or 2 stops). 
The range of filters, from light to dark, is:

#21 orange
#25 red
#70 
#89B (visible limit in front of a lens)
#88 (visible limit with naked eye)
#87
#87C
#87B
#87A
