Re: Market
I've read both the original note and this response with great interest and
felt the need to respond.
We have been doing outdoor art shows for some time now and before that I was
active in the wedding, YUK!, market and in the horsesport market. We have
learned many things over the years, especially when it comes to the open
market.
Shoot what your heart tells you to shoot!! Anything else is purely
mercenary. By way of explanation I offer the following.
We used to do some of our shooting with the idea in mind of this subject
matter or that scene appealing to someone passing our booth at an art show.
As if we could figure out what the buying public wanted in the area of photo
art. What we got for our efforts was general frustration at not selling that
which we figured the public would buy. The result was a general feeling that
nothing worked. Then we said "to hell with these people" and started
shooting and, in my fiancee's case, hand painting photographs that WE wanted
to shoot, print, and display. All of a sudden, we noticed that our display
showed what was in our heart and in our mind's eye. I can't say that the
sales are all that higher; but, our frustration level is lower.
Of course, any street showing artist must have traffic items to sell in the
low end range to make back booth fees and expenses. But, that's another
story altogether. So, my advice to you is stay true to yourself and let
your heart and soul show through your work. The astute art director will
notice a style that is yours and yours alone. It might just be what they are
looking for for that next campaign. And, don't copy others; but, take
snipetts that you find appealing to the heart from here and there and blend
it into your own style.
Be yourself!!
