How about a Canon EOS-1N? Or, for a beginner, a Canon EOS Rebel-G? Or
any 
good modern 35mm SLR? Or, for the manual focus die-hard, a Canon T-90?
I do not have an autofocus camera myself, but if I did not have an
investment 
in two Canon FD bodies (T-90 and AT-1) plus a bagful of expensive
lenses, I 
would buy AF for myself. I personally like Canon. I love the user
interface 
on the T-90, which makes the Zone system user-friendly, and also allows
full 
manual or full auto-exposure control. I also like Canon's lenses,
especially 
their "L" series. I am tempted to get an EOS body just for the 24mm tilt
and 
shift lens. Everyones needs are different. As a teacher, I would help my 
students to choose a camera based on their own needs and budget. For
action 
shots with long lenses, I consider AF highly desirable, if not a must.
Why 
turn our backs on new technology? Sure students should learn the basics
first, 
but you don't need a basic camera to learn the basics.
