I've had good success using an air purifier (not an air filter), that employs
both ozone and ionization to "scrub" the air of impurities.  The ozone
chemically breaks down airborne molecules and neutralize smells; the ions
attach to particulate matter and settle them out (particulate matter is what
causes most allergic reactions).  I have less dust in the air and less static
electricity.  I have technical info for anyone interested.
