I would like to thank all who replied to my questions about IR and lens
flare/internal reflections. Thanks to your suggestions and a careful
evaluation of the negs I think I have the answers. At least to this
problem!
First, I was a university photogrpher for a good many years so I have
encountered this back lit situation before but had never experienced
such extreme results. The Nikon and between-the-rails filter I believe
suffered from a combination of a zoom lens and the extra reflective
surface behind the mirror which I could not see through the viewfinder.
Even though I had stopped down, this effect would not have appeared
until the mirrror went up. This was the one with the long line of iris
images across the neg aligned with the direction of the sun. The Rollei
on the other habnd exhibited more conventional lens flare. Probably,
as one of the responders suggested, because it is an older model without
multi-coating. That fact and the filter being in a somewhat thick
mounting adapter probably exaggerated the situation. Since the viewing
lens didn't have the filter on it I wouldn't see the flare there. I
think I now know what to look out for anyway.
I do thank you all again and would like to express my pleasure with this
list. Many people try sincerely to help you out and, unlike other photo
lists to which I subscribe, there are no snide remarks or insults. I
appreciate that.
