Yes, it does sound like that. If that is the explanation, I'd expect
to find variations in the effect that follow the pattern of the
sprocket holes themselves, where the turbulence tends to be greatest.
No such pattern was visible in the frames I'm talking about. However,
because there was some evidence of excessive agitation elsewhere at
about that time I've changed my technique in this respect since then.
So perhaps this was at least a contributing factor.
