My reading is that for scientific and technical use, AR-5 processing
is required in order to maintain results consistent with the previous
materials.  With E-6 processing, contrast and saturation are both
higher, as is the effective EI (effectively, push processing), which
would screw up the automatic analysis, if any, that scientific and
technical users have come to rely on.

The behavior of the three layers is mutually inconsistent
inconsistant, even with AR-5 processing, as shown in the
density/exposure graph.  But I presume that in the old material the
red-sensitive layer also was less contrasty and capable of less shadow
density.
