I once shot a scene with a lot of trees.  I didn't notice the power lines
running through them as they were somewhat hidden by the dark foliage.  In
the finished image, the trees were white but the power lines remained black
and were very noticable, distracting, and ugly.  But I doubt this is what
your friend was warning you about!
