Bulk loading HIE for 35mm cameras?
- From: "ROLLAND ELLIOTT (Quality Assurance Co-Op)" <rolland.elliott@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Subject: Bulk loading HIE for 35mm cameras?
- Date: Tue, 06 May 1997 10:07:31 EDT
I was wondering if one can bulk load HIE for 35mm Cameras. My 1996 Kodak
professional photographic catalog says Kodak sells the following:
CAT No. Size mmxft Spec. No. Letter Code Sales UnitPrice/Unit
160 4149 35x150 417 HIE 1 Roll $174.45
169 0841 70x150 494 1 Roll $195.35
The street prices for this film are a little cheaper. (Ex. B&H's price for
a roll of 70mm film is $163.95.
The 35mmx150ft film has Bell and Howell (BH) perforated both edges while the 70
mm roll has Type II performations - in accordance with ANSI PH1.10-1976. The 7
0mm film comes in a 4-mil Estar Base.
I was thinking of buying a roll of 70mm film and cutting it straight down the
middle. This would theoretically give me two 150 ft. rolls of 35mm HIE with
only one perforated edge, which I could use to bulk roll 35mm casettes in My
Alden bulk roller. This would reduce my cost for HIE from about $8 a roll to
about $3.00 a roll! Film with only one perforated edge would still feed
through my Nikon N90s as long as the perforations are on the bottom of the
film.
Or I could buy the 35mmx150 Bell & Howard performated film and see if it feeds
through my camera even though it has a different perforated edges.
Bulk loading HIE would be a royal pain in the a** because I'd have to do everyt
hing in the total darkness, but if I can save $5 a roll it would be worth it.
I bet I could also fit about 70 exposures in a roll, which would be great for
outdoor photography. The less I have to pull out a changing tent the better!
If anyone has any experience doing this I'd really appreciate it. It would be
very comforting to know that my ideas are realilistic before spending close
to $200 on a roll of HIE film and supplies.
Thanks Rolland
P.S. You can get a copy of Kodak's 1996Professional Photographic Catalog Publi
