I am surprised you have so much problems with the BTFR (between the
film rails) filter. I start wondering whether gel is not only very
sensitive to moisture, but also static loaded easily. Right now I use
a thick (0.4mm) polyester foil #87C in my EOS-1, and it has not given me
any problem yet. Regrettably there are no foil alternatives other
than the Lee #87 (0.1mm), other than gelatine that is.
Btw, I can get you a non-Kodak #89B gelatine filter, perhaps it makes
a difference in dust attraction. I does feel less moisture sensitive.
Btw2: AFAIK Kodak doesn't make #89B anymore, only #87 and #87C....I
assume you use an old filter?

Have you tried the Cokin-P holder, by holding the 'ears'
horizontally? Only for gradual ND/color filters you need those ears
vertically, to slide up and down.
I also modified my P-holder by fitting the hood-bayonet system of my
Minolta 20mm and Canon 20mm/24mm TS-E directly, ie without the metal
filter ring. Gives you another 5mm gain, and in an last attempt you
could file off the top 2 slots from the 'ears'. If even that fails,
then an ordinary 72mm screw filter probably won't work either....8-))
And only B+W sells dedicated wide angle versions of all their filters
(Nikon & Heliopan only offer polarizers in wide angle version).
Btw, chances are high that I will order a custom color batch of #87B
filters in the near future. This is a darker color than #87C. It will
probably be a size mix of Cokin-P, Horizon 202 and Noblex filters
(1.5mm thick), but if anyone has special requests (4x4"?), please let
me know.
