It is the lack of an antihalation layer in HIE that makes the
pressure plates a problem in the first place. HIE more or less counts
on the back reflection, part of it might even be responsible for the
fuzzy highlights.
As Ektachrome IR provides clear highlights, I assume it has an
antihalation layer (or is that impossible with slides?), and hence is
not sensitive to dimpled pressure plates.
Btw, one of the experiments I never seem to get to: comparing images
shot with a completely absorbing pressure plate vs images shot with
a completely reflective pressure plate. 100% absorption should be
manageable with 120 backing, 100% reflection with alu foil. If the
theory of reflective backs adding to the highlight effect of HIE
is correct, then a difference should be noticeable in the image.
