I had similar problems (as you can see from the image of the columns
in a picture that Cor has posted in the Gallery).  On subsequent
rolls, I've made the agitation much gentler, and I haven't noticed the
problem since.  That isn't to say that the agitation change solved the
problem, but...

The roll with the columns was agitated (in a small Nikor tank) by
vigorous, repeated inversion for 5 seconds of every 30 seconds.
Present practice is to rotate axially back and forth, and gently, for
less than 10 seconds every minute.  Actual agitation time is perhaps
about 6-8 seconds.
