The Cokin A and P adapters are different filter sizes, but it is not
dependent on the type of camera you have (amateur vs. professional, 35mm
vs medium, etc.) per se.  It is based on the lens filter diameter.
Cokin sells various ring adapter sizes - for example, you can get a 52mm
for either a P or A adatper which will work equally well with either a
35mm or medium format lens, provided the lens can accept a 52mm filter.

The one big caveat is make sure you don't run into trouble with
vignetting.  The smaller A size doesn't work as well with all the focal
lengths.  I try to avoid the A size when I can so I don't have to worry
about it.
