How about using a pyro developer? (PMK)? I haven't used this yet, but I was
lead to believe that it stains the film in a way that reduces the effect or
perception of graininess. W.J's home page has some great notes and links about
this stuff. George - what do you mean by 'mushing'??!

I can only guess that you are put off by the relatively larger grain
size of HIE. In lieu of trying to find a developer that will mush up
your negatives I will give a couple of suggestions.
