     Microdol-X works fine with HIE.

I use it 1:3 @ 68F for 24 min. Grain is still there, but doesn't
     overwhelm the print.

BTW - I saw in one reference ( dont remember the title right off hand,
but I could get it if any one is interested ) that microdol straight
stock was recommended for HIE 13 min @ 68F.

You still get the nice white plant material, black skys, white human
skin, but you don't get massive clumps of grain.

     Tony

I'm afraid I have no answers for you, but... I, too, noticed an
inordinate amount of grain in my HIE negatives. Many years back I used to
use Microdol-X with Plus-X and Tri-X films, and loved the fine grain it
produced. Has anyone used Microdol with HIE? How were the results?
