Scientific IR example
Normally I would not do this but I thought that since the time frame during
which this image will be prominently available on my index page will be rather
short, I would mention that I have posted an example of an application where
reflected infrared photography was used to show how Diego Velazquez had
modified his paintings.
One of the most remarkable examples of these "pentimenti" is the changes made to
his painting "The forge of Vulcan" which is located in the Prado Museum in
Madrid, Spain. I did the IR work for a project organized by several art
historians, conservators, etc. led by Gridley McKim Smith.
The detail of the painting concentrating on Vulcan is viewable as a
panchromatic record and as a reflected IR record made through an 87C filter at:
http://www.rit.edu/~andpph and if you want to see how close I stood to the
painting while making some of the photographs you can do so by going to another
location: http://www.rit.edu/~andpph/text-infrared-ultraviolet.html
