Re: Home Process of 70mm
This is not a new topic I understand, but the way I did it just may be.
I've managed to modify a 120 processing reel (widen it about a 1/4 inch--or
6mm) so it could take a "short" roll--about 12 to 13 exposures--of 70mm
Aerochrome CIR film. In the way of background, all of our 70mm work is
Forestry-related photography using both CIR and B&W infrared film. Why
most of our work is better processed by commercial labs specializing in
this type of long-roll development, we needed the ability to "spot" develop
CIR in E-6 for certain projects. After managing to locate a 120 reel with a
plastic core, I cut the thing in half, added the appropriate amount of
spacers, and came up with a reel that would take 70mm film.
Needless to say the whole thing has worked and worked well. The resulting
E-6 processed CIR film has proven to be very useful for our type of work.
As an aside, processing CIR in E-6 does just what Kodak says it would. Our
transparencies do show a shift toward the magenta with an increase in
contrast also obvious.
As another aside, if you get the chance, do have your 35mm CIR
transparencies processed in the recommended AR-5 chemistry. The
differences between this and E-6 are astounding! AR-5 delivers much truer
IR color that really shows the differences between trees, shrubs and grass.
