Is it just me, or is there anyone else out there?
Color is one thing because in color, there is a standard which is
established for the process right from the design stages; any deviation
from that standard (except in very rare instances which really aren't
worth going into here) has one and only one outcome: loss of quality.
So, if the lab is processing within tolerances that you can accept (and
the manufacturer has helped by providing these tolerances), it is not
possible to do any better myself. For me, there is really no point at
all in processing color film in my own lab. It is boring and difficult
because of the temperature requirements (unless I were to fix or replace
my old machines). And, in fact, it just isn't worth it, if I assign any
value to my time.
In black and white, there are many decisions to be made, and I have never
had results from a lab which I have really been happy with. I wouldn't
dream of giving my film to anyone else to process unless I could dictate
absolutely how it would be done. I couldn't afford a lab that would
allow that!
