Emboldened by Richard's kind words I'll just lay my first experiences of HIE
on you. I know there are one or two people on the list who (at least until
recently) have yet to expose a roll of infrared and I must confess that I've
only just run through my own debut roll.

Metering TTL at ISO 200 with a 25 Red filter in place I guessed vaguely at
the quantity of IR present and the IR reflectivity of the subject matter,
bearing in mind the precepts in Laurie White's book. I then under-exposed
(relative to the meter recommendation) between zero and two stops depending
on how much IR I decided there was around. I had intended to expose the
entire roll in one burst but couldn't find enough subjects to shoot that day
(and am too mean to bracket) so the film ended up residing in the camera for
about three weeks, including numerous sunny days on the back seat of my car.

I was convinced the entire roll would be ruined but only five shots were
fogged; about five more were just rubbish, presumably because I'd made a
wrong guess on exposure. But from a 36-exp roll I got around 25 decent IR
shots, all with the requisite post-nuclear blast effect.

Obviously that was all pretty poor procedure on my part and could scarcely be
recommended. I just wanted to say to anyone who's first roll of HIE is still
waiting in the fridge: give it a go! I was slightly nervous about using the
stuff but it's not that scary and I think you'd have to be pretty unlucky not
to get at least a couple of really striking shots from your first attempt,
which only makes you eager to go out and have another crack.

As I'm still getting around to setting up a darkroom I can't claim full
credit for my initial success. I commend to you the work of Michael White who
advertises in Practical Photography and who seems to be the only processor in
the UK who offers a reasonably-priced IR develop-and-print service.
