#87 refers to the Kodak Wratten Gelatin filters which are gelatin
filters mounted on (I think) an acetate base. They are commonly 2
inches by 2 inches square and are manufactured for high optical quality
with the intent that they be used in front of the lens. The particular
#87 filter is an infrared passing only filter that looks black when
viewed by the (human) eye. There are subvariants like 87a 87b and 87c
which vary in their IR spectral characteristics.

Wratten gelatin filters are not popular anymore because they are
delicate compared to glass mounted filters and you need to get a special
filter holder to mount the filter onto your camera lens. I have one and
it's a real pain in the ass to use. I eventually was able to find a
Hoya brand 52 mm mounted No.87 filter but it was somewhat expensive as I
don't think there is a big market for it.

P.S. I'm pulling this info from memory from reading some Kodak filter
guidebook. Someone tell me if I'm full of __it.
