Hi Everyone, Just wanted to mention that I have a JVC GRDV-1 Digital
Camcorder that works pretty well for previsualizing infrared effects. I have
fitted a Kodak Wratten 87C filter over the lens and I am able to see stunning
IR images through it. However, the shutter speed of the camera must be
changed from it's default of 1/60 of a second to it's slow shutter speed mode
which is around 1/5 of a second I think. This works great on sunny days, but
on overcast days the image is a little hard to see. This is fine with me
since I don't usually shoot IR film on overcast days! You can shoot IR video
footage with it, but any thing that is moving is very blurry. This can be a
drawback, but it also creates a very supernatural effect; people moving
around look like ghosts or spirits.
I have also looked through the camcorder with a 89B filter over the lens.
Since this filter cuts off almost all of the visible spectrum, it produces
some good IR images. It also creates a brighter image since the 89B alows
much more light in. However, the resulting images have a redish tint to
them. One might be able to white balance the camera to correct the tint and
create a true black and white image.
The great thing about this digital camcorder is that it is very small, and is
just a little bigger than a typical 35mm point and shoot camera. In my
opinion a great previsualization tool for IR work. It cost me $1075 in US
dollars. It takes good video footage too!
Have fun shooting, Rolland Elliott
