It has to do with the chemistry of the adhesive.  When the bond with
the film is broken, there are very weak flashes of light.  As you
noticed, they don't fog the film; after you've been in the dark for a
while, your eyes are much more sensitive than the film.  You can
duplicate the effect with (some kinds of) tape stuck to any surface or
by crushing sugar crystals in the dark.
