Re: INfrared Basics
Hi Greg,
your camera would have defaulted to some ISO setting(maybe 100 or
200ASA?), your camera's manual may tell you what this is. This is because 35mm
rolls of HIE(Kodak's) and Konica's Infra Red film won't have the ISO encoded
using the silver and black squares on the side of the film roll. (DX code)
I suggest setting the ISO to a known value, and bracket each shot by say +/- 2
stops. The final density of the negatives will depend on MANY factors, and
getting the density/contrast you like for printing is half the experience of
shooting IR film. Discover for yourself! Some of the many factors include
exposure time, aperture setting, filter type, development procedures, and amount
of IR/visible light in the picture.
The 'white burned into the next picture' you write of is caused by light from
within one frame reflecting back and forth between both the camera's pressure
plate and the lens side of the film and also between the two surfaces of the
film. This happens with HIE because it doesn't have an 'anti halation layer' on
it. (Konica film does however, and won't give you those lovely halos lie HIE)
happy shooting,
regards
Peter B.

Hello,Im wondering.....I just shot a role of B&W infrared,but I didnt set
an ISO for the film.My results were pretty dissapointing.I event had a few
shots that the white burned into the next picture.Im wondering if I would
have better luck setting an ISO and to what number? And if I do set an ISO
can I bracket around the metering of the camera and have a pretty accurate
outcome? Also I have a photo of the month on my web page
http//www:geocities.com/hollywood/hills/4347 so please send me some
entrees,Ive got my own pic for right now.Id be pleased to hear from any
advisors .Thanks GREG
