Re how to scan an image
- Every scanner I have used comes with a "TWAIN"
driver. That means that you can aquire an image using any
TWAIN-compatible image-manipulation programs. One very good such
shareware program in Paintshop Pro. When you scan the image you should
only scan to the resolution that you want to end up with. For example,
if you have a 4 inch by 6 inch photograph and you want to end up with
a 200 by 300 image, then you should scan at 50 dpi. During the scan,
you should adjust contrast, color, etc. to your liking. After the scan,
you can save the image in the format that best suits your need. For
attaching to e-mail you probably want to compress as much as possible.
Paintshop Pro allows you to store the image in many formats, including
JPEG, GIF, TIF, PCD, PCX, and lots more.
JPEG is probably best for email attachments - chose Standard Encoding
(Progressive encoding is best for Web images). Lastly you can chose
the compression level. A higher compression level will give you a
smaller file, but less quality. You can start with a high level of
compression and see what it looks like. If it is not good enough
go to a lower level of compression.
A FEW WORDS OF WARNING - PLEASE NEVER POST AN EMAIL WITH IMAGE
ATTACHMENT TO A NEWS GROUP OR EMAIL EXPLODER!!!
I have seen many groups brought to their knees this way.
Images, even compressed, are much much larger than text. You will find
all sorts of unexpected things will happen. Someones mailserver will
bounce the mail back to the group. It will bounce back again. Then
everyone will start getting multiple copies of this huge file. More
servers will bounce mail, triggering a chain reaction. People will
start to complain. Not just to you, but to the whole group (A lot of
people just seem to lose their heads at this time) The complaints
will add oil to the fire. You - the person who started this, will
be called a lot of names. Some not very complimentary.
Most subscribers to the mail group will quit.
So, don't do it. And if anyone else does, do not reply to the
whole group. Send them advice by direct one-to-one mail.
If you have a nice image you want to share with the group, the
best way is to put it up on a web server and post the URL to the
group. If you do not have access to a publicly accessible
server, then post an offer to email the image privately to
anyone who asks for it.
