New Handcoloring Pens

On page 58 of the January issue of PPA Storyteller magazine, there's an
article called "Everything Old is New." It's about a new set of
handcoloring markers by SpotPen, located in New Mexico, USA. (505)
523-8820, FAX (505) 647-8786. I contacted the company for info.

They also make retouching markers, but these new ones are specifically for
handcoloring, and have "broad tips and brush points for creative
applications." There are 3 groups of 8 colors each, a kit (which contains
color group 1, pre-moistening solution, dye remover pen, sponge, and
cotton), and even an instructional video tape.

They sent me a color chart of the different groups, and recommended that
anyone getting started purchase at least the Kit and Group 2. Retailers who
sell these include B&W (800-947-6628), Calumet (800-225-8638), Samy's
(800-321-4726), Freestyle (800-292-6137), Light Impressions (800-828-6216),
Pro Camera (800-299-4776), and Porters (800-553-2001).

I contacted B&H for pricing via their web site (www.bhphotovideo.com), and
got back this reply:

The magazine article says that these pens are great time and money savers
since they can by used on any paper surface (even glossy), and are almost as
easy to apply to photos as highlighters are to textbooks. Even a novice can
get great results. They do not leave any surface residue. Because they
penetrate the emulsion, no lacquer finishing spray is necessary.

In a side bar, the article says to make sure your lab is using fixer with
hardener, or if that's not possible, let the print cure at least 5 days
before hand coloring. Otherwise, emulsion peeling will almost certainly
occur. To pre-moisten the prints, you can use the solution that comes in
the Kit, or a mixture of 1 teaspoon Photo-Flo to 32 ounces of water.
