I saw a demo of such a system last february.  It consists of a Imaging
chip that lays against the shutter and the area where is 35mm film
canister goes is replaced with the digital guts.  The one I aw was a
400x600 ppi sensor, but it did not work.  The company was hoping to have
a working item before the end of the year.
