One of the things to note with the Cokin holder is that you should rotate it so that the bits that stick out the furthest are along the top and bottom of your lens.  (the holder is being held horizontally and not vertically.)  Using this method I have been able to take potos with a 17mm lens, one filter and no vignetting.  If the holder is attached vertically the vignetting is obvious with or without the filter present.
