Peter and Angela, I too agree with what you say about electro static
discharges. What you try to say could be quite valied in explaining that
pinhole problem because perhaps you all know that there was/is
something called Kirlian Photography which uses electric-fields and
photosensitive materials inorder to capture 'bio-electric-field' around
tissues (plant and animal). Meaning that it is not necessary to have an
electric discharge but if the local electric field intensification is
high enough to initiate a phenomeon called 'cold electron emission'
observed effect can be explained. couple of dust particles on the film 
which are charged electrostatically by rubbing or whatever could do
the whole job.
