One thing that these charts drives home to me is the relative utility (or
lack of) of the various 87 series filters. I have never been able to see
the reasoning behind using anything other than a #87 filter with HIE film.
Since the 87 is visually opaque, it should be the most desirable for
non-scientific uses. The 'higher' order filters such as the 87C,B,A all cut
off useful IR from the film. I can't see how there can be any gain in
image quality by eliminating any of the IR wavelengths past 700 nm.
