New HIE Problem (Lines)
- From: "Elton N. Kaufmann - Cycloid Fathom Group" <cycloid@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx>
- Subject: New HIE Problem (Lines)
- Date: Sun, 31 May 1998 23:42:14 -0500
I just returned from 13 days in Southern Utah and eastern and central
Nevada (with a bit of California thrown in). I shot 7 rolls of HIE and 8
rolls of 120 Konica 750. Just began processing today. Here's my experience:
Processing: (5 rolls of HIE in one tank - 50 oz. of solution to cover)
Presoak in distilled water for one minute;
XTOL 1:1 (with distilled water), 70 deg F, 9 minutes (per the Kodak Xtol
tech data sheet), one gentle inversion every minute with a 360 deg roll of
the Patterson small tank at the same time;
Stop for one minute in distilled water bath;
Fix in 2-bath Kodak Rapid fix (3min. in first, 3 min. in second);
Wash ten minutes in running tap water;
Photoflo 30 seconds, squeegee, drip dry.
These negs came out a tad soft - quite printable but I would guess the
d-max is not over 1.7 or 1.8 where I was used to 2.0 to 2.2. Could be due
to less agitation. My old pinhole problem however is much less with this
process.
Problem:
I observe on four of the five rolls a very sharp dark line about 24 to 28
mm long that runs exactly parallel to the film edge and almost exactly 9mm
into the frame from the frame edge. This line appears periodically on the
roll at 8 frame intervals. When it crosses the interframe space, it is
still visible but quite light compared to its density in the picture area.
I have examined it with a loop in reflected light and see no evidence of
scratching on either the emulsion or film base sides. It seems to be a
slightly above base+fog fine line exposure. The registry with the frames
is slightly different on each roll (still every 8 frames but starts in
different relative locations because, I guess, each roll was loaded with
slightly different amount leader on the take-up spool.)
The fifth roll did not show this pattern at all. Instead it showed the
fine line as continuous for almost the whole length of the roll and rather
dark. It (thankfully) runs a hair's width below (outside) the frame area.
All the rolls were shot in a Nikon 8008s.
Although not relevant to this problem, I used EI200 TTF with #29 Wratten
Red, bracketed up and down one stop, and bumped one stop up for the #87
(compared to TTF #29, no reading through the #87, of course).
Has anyone seen such lines before or does anyone have any theories.
Because of bracketing I believe I have a usable neg for all the scenes (but
maybe not the optimum one).
Thanks for any insight,
EltonK
