A deeper filter will darken the sky more, but what looks like a
blue sky isn't always the sort of clear blue sky that will turn
really black. You've probably noticed how bright clouds are in
IR photos. A uniform high haze that makes the sky look like a
somewhat washed out blue will leave the sky quite light in IR,
sometimes no darker than you'll get with standard panchromatic
B&W and a deep red filter. We get a lot of days like that in the
Seattle/Puget Sound region because of our relatively high
humidity. All the other IR effects are there: the bays turn
black, the trees are light, etc., but the skies stay more normal
looking.
