Ian,
I used to use LC29 most of the time and got some good negs from HIE - I
think I used 9 or 10 minutes and got negs with a good range of tones and
relatively fine grain. I once tried Ilfosol-s with FP4 and didn't like
it. I got fine grain but the negs were noticably fuzzy ( ...or low
actuance, if you're technically minded ;-) ) so I never went any further
down that road. I can recommend LC29 - I used it several years and got
some excellent results with it. Never used it in 1+29 though, mostly 1+9.
If you use LC29 with other films then use it for HIE - I found there was
a lot of wastage when you start using several different developers. I
found I was using HC110 most of the time and so just switch to that full
time. If I want to use it to get low contrast negs I can just dilute it
down more and reduce agitation.
