QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT HYPERSENSITIZED FILM
WHO SHOULD USE HYPERSENSITIZED FILM? Anyone who plans on doing available-light terrestrial photography or astrophotography with exposure durations longer than about 10 seconds. Most films suffer progressively worse low-intensity reciprocity failure for exposures longer than a few seconds, and dramatic speed gains of 4-10 times or more are routinely achieved, especially in long exposure astrophotography.
All films benefit; even the fast 103a series of spectroscopic films exhibit 2-3X speed gain after gas hypersensitization. Fine grain Kodak Technical Pan 2415 gains 10X as indicated by the photos above, color film gains 3-8X in speed. Gas hypersensitized h hypered film is much easier to use than a cold camera.
HOW FAST IS HYPERSENSITIZED FILM? ASA speed ratings are approximately doubled for short exposures useful in terrestrial, lunar, and planetary photography. Ultra-fine grain film like Kodak Technical Pan 2415 reaches an ASA speed of about 250 and is as fast as coarse-grained normal 103a-E or 103a-F spectroscopic films. Color film speeds approach that of a cold camera, but with much improved blue response.
WHICH FILMS ARE BEST? Unquestionably hypersensitized 2415, as shown in the photos above and on the cover, is the best B & W film because of its vanishingly fine grain, high speed, high contrast, and excellent red sensitivity. For color slides both hypered Fujichrome RD100 and Scotch 3M 1000 give excellent results. Hypered Konica SR1600 is the fastest color negative film and is great for galaxies. Fujichrome RD100 film developed as a negative is the best overall film for color negatives, and has excellent blue and red response e. Konica SR400 is a nice fast, yet fine grain color negative film.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO HYPERSENSITIZE FILM? The Model 100 HYPER-KIT takes 1-10 days, depending on film type. The Model 300, 600 and 1200 HYPER-KITS take only 3-30 hours, depending on film type and operation temperature.103a and color film take th e least time, while Kodak Technical Pan 2415 takes the longest time to hypersensitize.
HOW LONG DOES HYPERSENSITIZED FILM LAST? Technical Pan 2415 can be stored many months in a freezer or up to 1 week at room temperature. Color film stores about 1 month in a freezer. Instructions for storage without speed loss are given with each ki t.
