Anyone else have a hard time getting 4x5 IR negs out of holders without
damaging them.
----------
I load about 400 sheets of HSI a year and have not had a problem with it
(YET!!!).
I know the technician before me had the problem of finger prints and
scratches on the film though.
Are the scratches on the film base side or on the emulsion side?
If they are on the film base side I would guess that they have been caused
by very small bits of grit or dust as I believe HSI is more prone to this
than other films (due the lack of antihalation/antiucurl layer?). I always
make sure that the filmholders are clean before I load the film by brushing
them out with a stiff artists brush, this could be done before they are
placed in the changing bag.
If however they are on the emulsion side it is most lightly to be the
handling of the film that is causing it. To remove them I catch the bottom
of the film under the nail of my middle finger and pull it out far enough so
I can then just hold the film by the sides. I NEVER touch the surface of he
film, with practice this can be done. Perhaps try loading and unloading the
film in the darkslides with some used/fogged film first until you are very
comfortable at using it. I always find it harder to load film while using a
changing bag, partly due to the humidity increasing in the bag I think.
