I'm guessing that it was probably F8 - definitely not wide open.  My theory is
that it is flare resulting in light banging back and forth between the elements
within the lens, though I can't tell you why the aperture was not involved.  I
just don't know enough about lenses to be sure (or confident) about my guess.
