There has to be something else involved.  I used a 25 filter for years with
good results.  I have never used an 87.  However, I have used an 87C filter
fitted between the rails for the last two years with excellent results.  My
only problem came with using a Kodak gelatin filter which shattered after
several rolls.  Otherwise my experience is that the 87c produces even
higher IR effect which is vert helpful in winter.  In summer it is almost
too much.  I have experienced no change in sharpness of image--although
I've never thought of HIE as being sharp.  

Did you change anything else?  If not, then I would suggest that the filter
does not or is not fitted correctly.  As in being too thick and pushing
against the film.  Otherwise I have no explanation.  Even this is just a
guess.
